I thought it will be best to just keep adding onto 1 thread, then if your interested you know where it is and if you aren't you can just avoid my tales of builders and their bums
well!!!!!
The ground is cleared, *fingers* the foundations will be dug this weekend, but we are waiting on the planner; namely Aude and John our Architect to sort the style of windows, he has his instructions
But Aude also wants the plan for the garden, complete with what we are going to make hedges with, and what trees we are going to plant
erm this is the very last thing we will be doing, so why now

Can I suggest beech hedges rather than privet?
Traditional, but beautiful, you'd get the autumn colours with them.
Alternatively use stuff that's prickly - discourages burglars. Crown-of-thorns (and related bushes) are also very pretty, with lovely berries for the birds etc.

Pyracantha is apparently one of the most viciously prickly garden shrubs. I'm thinking about planting them under my downstairs windows. The downside of hedges is that they can give burglars cover.
The petty little bureaucratic Hitlers who are dictating how you plant you garden should be dragged repeatedly through pyracantha bushes.

Pyracanthus IS crown-of-thorns. I'd forgotten it's sunday name.
We've planted several under our front windows to discourage burglars, but given we've been burgled twice by them smashing the front windows and climbing in, it's just a little bolting the stable door after the horse has gone.
We've also got big sheets of perspex over the insides of the windows, and Michael bolts metal bars over them when we're away. We've got wrought iron gates over the back windows, bolted to the outside of the house.

I'm a wee bit garden phobic, my Dad was so up his about his that I only remember once helping (2ton of compost left outside the garage door, and Dad needing to get to work ) and after that his garden was to be looked at, not walked on, not played
Pyracanthus was a great favourite of his, which is why I recognise the name
We are actually having a traditional farmers' fence of poles and barbed wire between us and the , any plant would get between me and them, I like them and when we checked it's actually on the approval so and anyway, whatever they say that's what will be
We are having a Fushia hedge between us and the cottage, Noi loves Fushia's and I grew up with them growing wild as hedgrow plants, the other trees we will have are apples and plums, for jams & chutneys, and a weeping willow where Kenzie is buried, he would have spent hours playing with the branches Jenny is also going to design me a wee hidden garden which will catch the sun and be lovely out side my full length sitting room window, plus herbs
Burglars there is usually someone about, we are going to have to learn to lock doors this is going to be hard work, 12 yrs ago Gordon didn't even have a lock on the door, never mind a key
As for the foundations, Kenny (who own's our builders it's a quite big firm) and his mason came out, but it was decided that Gordon 1st needed to clear the ground down another 3 ft at the top end, which Gordon did yesterday, he's just about to start cutting the barley any minute now (combine JUST started as I hit the w in now ) so Kenny will be digging out the foundations next week
Good to see you home on the Sue

I've had visitors for the last week. Exhausting, but wonderful fun. Just waiting for the payback!
Michael planted twisted weeping willow to celebrate getting his Master's degree.
It's really really pretty, much more so than a plain willow.
Not planted in the best of places, it has to be said, though. Our "gardening" is a bit haphazard.

| Those are gorgeous pics Sue - I usually prefer twisted willow in the winter when the leaves are gone but yours is lovely now.

Shucks!
I think the branches would be more twisted if they weren't struggling to find the sun.
I suppose it must have been about 10 years since it was planted. It has grown quite a bit, and I really don't think it should be so close to the house!
It is a very, very pretty tree though.

I always feel sorry for twisted willows - it doesn't look very comfy for it being all contorted
